My experience here at Ferreira Legal has been an outstanding one. Not only was I given the opportunity to live in such an incredible city for two months, but I was introduced to the world of immigration law by a wonderful individual who has been such an inspiration to me. One of the most interesting things I learned that stuck with me from the beginning of my internship was the Summons by Publication. This is essentially sending an ad to the local newspaper notifying someone, a father or mother, that an individual is seeking custody of their child. The most interesting thing about this is that the mother or father may not be in the same city, or even the same country, and may not know this child is theirs. This is a roundabout way of going around obstacles that may deter a relative gaining custody of the child, which I found to be really interesting.
Not only have I learned a lot through readings and knowledge that Jessica has passed on to me, but we would also travel to Tacoma twice a week to meet with clients. We would either hold a consultation meeting, check in on their case, or even go to court. Meeting with these detainees really changes the entire premise of immigration law. You are speaking with them face-to-face, hearing their stories, and in some instances, you see them become very upset, may that be from realizing their friends and family are supporting them or because they have been through so much and it’s difficult to contain those emotions. Either way, it is the immigration attorney’s job to ensure that they will do everything they can to make life right for them again. I was lucky enough to have such a great example of this reassurance from Jessica in watching how she interacted with her clients.
I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and although it saddens me to be leaving, I will carry the lessons I have learned with me on to my next step. Thank you Ferreira Legal for keeping me engaged and curious and for opening my eyes to the world around me. It was a pleasure interning for such an outstanding immigration attorney and I cannot wait to see all the good that Ferreira Legal accomplishes.
